The BMA team is working on setting up the basis for the Pilot project, which consists on a social garden, similar to the pilot in Rome. The “social” term means that the garden pursues a community building, training and therapeutic function. Some visits have been done to find a suitable site to locate the infrastructure. The garden will be located in a boundary between urban and rural area. This use guarantees a social control for this potentially marginal space and articulates the transition between the two areas.

Rome isn’t all streets, traffic and buildings. Our city is full of green areas, a heritage that must be preserved, also against new urbanization projects. Sidigmed is trying to disseminate a new culture on how to manage these areas, which are public goods, to be used by and for the whole community. How? Rome staff continues the local visits to the good examples of existing urban gardens, in the view of selecting eligible areas for the pilot phase, where to involve marginalized people and improve the relationship between local Public Administration (the “Municipi”) and the associations/organizations active in these areas. Here are the pictures related to “Riserva Naturale Valle dell’Aniene”, with a guided tour of the local association “Insieme per l’Aniene onlus”.

The Italian staff is currently visiting the possible pilot sites, also thanks to the active collaboration with the local associated partner “Caritas Roma”. The scope is to find eligible areas, where to host the urban gardens units (the pilot of the project). Such areas must involve marginalized people at risk of urban exclusion, with the active role of local associations/organizations working with marginalized people in the urban and periurban areas.

Place: Extension Center for Agricultural Research and Extension (NCARE) in Al-Balqa’, Jordan; time: 10:30-12:00

Trainer: Eng. Fatemah Abu Hazeem, Manager of Extension Center for Agricultural Research and Extension (NCARE) in Al-Balqa’

Attendance: 7 persons (2 men, 5 women) from the local community of Tell Ar-Rumman

Eng. Fatemah explained the role and activities of the Extension Center in Al Balqa’, and the main training activities offered to farmers and the local community in Balqa’ Governorate. She encouraged the people of Tell Ar-Rumman to communicate with the Extension Center any time in the future, effectively establishing a communication channel between NCARE and the local community which had not previously existed.

Eng. Fatemah then informed the workshop participants about poultry breeding in Jordan, and especially in Balqa’ Governorate, and the importance of each family having a small income generation project like chicken breeding to improve their livelihoods.

She gave an introduction to chicken feed, chicken coops (or hen houses) and organic egg production, and then explained in detail about poultry hatcheries, where eggs are hatched under artificial conditions for economic purposes, or to protect rare or endangered species.

Poultry hatcheries are used to produce the majority of the birds consumed, such as chicken, ducks, and minor species like quail. Producers must start with fertilized, cleaned eggs and avoid too large and too small eggs. Shells are checked for soundness before being put in the hatchery.

A hatchery controls temperature and humidity, and turns the eggs. Chicken eggs needs 21 days to hatch. The chicks need to be kept warm and must be vaccinated when they are a few days old.

Eng. Fatemah demonstrated how to use a poultry hatchery, showing how the mechanisms work, as well as the method of putting eggs into the hatchery and checking them.

Pictures of several chicken hatcheries projects in Al-Balqa’ were shown to the trainees.

On May 23rd, Staff from Roma Capitale attended an event organized by Municipio V, as speakers and discussants, with the help of an ad hoc poster, showing the name of the project and the composition of the partnership. The event was aimed at promoting SIDIGMED project on a local scale, targeting a political and social audience. Approximately 40 participants attended. Copies of the project and brief descriptions were distributed.

100 RESILIENT CITIES. Rome Agenda Setting Workshops

On June 5th-6th, Rome hosted a workshop, under the initiative “100 Resislient cities”, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Staff from Roma Capitale attended the event to promote the project on a local/regional scale, with the support of a roll-up-poster. For the strong role that agriculture plays in urban areas, the project was presented to the audience as a network of resilient cities in the Med Basin. In particular, the public was made aware by the positive role that UPA can play, in terms of: eco system – reduction of pressure and negative impacts on the environment; quality and proximity –  high quality food obtained from urban agriculture; fight against exclusion and marginalisation – the social role of urban agriculture.
